Flight Control Short Take

Short Take is a new minireview feature that brings you a few new games
every week. It provides "impressions" on a game.

Flight Control is widely known as one of the best-selling games on iPhone. However, I never really understood what the fuss was about. Until I bought it.

This may very well be the best 99c game on iPhone. It combines a unique line-drawing mechanism with highly addictive gameplay to provide an awesome package of fun. The graphics are beautifully drawn, and the music is well done. The game offers almost unlimited replay value with 5 levels and leaderboards. It even provides a Bluetooth multiplayer mode to play with friends! Well worth a shot.

American teen tennis player upsets Maria Sharapova in the U.S. Open

Just who is Melanie Oudin? In the ongoing U.S. Open she defeated the former No. 1, Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Oudin an American who is almost 18 pulled off a shocking upset at the U.S. Open, defeating Sharapova and other highly ranked tennis players, including Elena Dementieva, and Nadia Petrova. Oudin turned professional in February 2008, and her highest ranking was 67th on August 17, 2009. Oudin is the youngest American to make the top 16 of the U.S. Open since Serena Williams in 1999. Oudin qualified for the Australian Open and Wimbledon before entering the U.S. Open. In Wimbledon she advanced to the 4th round by defeating another former No. 1, Jelena Jonkovic. After defeating Petrova and Dementieva, the 5'6" 17 year old girl from Georgia, faced Sharapova. Oudin's play certainly wasn't hurt by Sharapova's astounding 21 double faults. After the match Sharapova remarked that Oudin "certainly has a great future ahead of her." A few years ago the up-and-comer in woman's tennis was 17 year old Russian Maria Sharapova. Now her place has been replaced by the 17 year old American Melanie Oudin. This girl is certainly someone to watch for the next few years.

Gangstar: West Coast Hustle Review

The first truly 3D open-world crime title has been released by Gameloft for the iPhone and iPod touch. How does it fare? Jump into our review and find out.

Story: Story is essential to a title of this calibre. Gameloft doesn't screw it up. The tale of Juan and P. Thug, fresh out of prison for pulling a bank heist that went bad, is told well through ingame cutscenes and 5 chapters worth of gameplay. It's fairly good, with all the right plot twists, bt forgettable.
8/10

Graphics: The engine shines here. Gameloft has pulled off a marvelous job with the visuals. The game engine runs smoothly on an iPod touch 2G without lengthy lag (more on that later) with respectable, if a bit short, draw distance. Textures are quite good for an iPhone game and humans are done exceptionally well. Collisions with other objects cause cars to deform well.
9/10

Gameplay: Oh boy. Gangstar is a blast to play. The game lends itself well to the goofy surreality experienced in games like GTA and Saints Row. It's fun to run over people, or shoot an RPG into traffic, or just explore. Missions are fun to play, with no noticeable glitches or bugs. Vehicle physics are extremely well done, with nice drifts and differing amounts of speed and handling in each vehicle. However, collision detection with inanimate obejcts is horrible. While the player can drive through signs and trees, the car stops dead if it even hits a planter pot. This really needs to be fixed. Another negative aspect is the lag. While the game rarely lags, when it actually occurs, it happens for up to 15 seconds at a time, making the game unplayable and prompting a restart. A couple of other features, like having plants/signs fall over, and being able to jump and climb, were sorely missed, but unneeded.
7/10

Sound: The soundtrack of the game shines, with 6 stations, each with its own genre and ads. iPod music can also be accessed through the menu. However the game occasionally tends to lag for about a half second before each track although this is quite rare.
9/10

Nett Result: Fairly awesome game, but with a few kinks that prevent it from being perfect.
8/10 - PRETTY GOOD
